Elke Gaugele ist Empirische Kulturwissenschaftlerin und Professorin für Moden und Styles/Gestaltung im Kontext an der Akademie der bildenden Künste, Wien. In ihrer Forschung und Lehre sowie in ihren Publikationen entwickelte sie einen postkolonialen und intersektional-feministischen Ansatz der Mode-Forschung mit Fokus auf Ästhetik, Ethik, globale/soziale Gerechtigkeit und Politik. Weiterer Schwerpunkt ihrer Kulturanalyse ist die Rolle von Mode, Design und Kunst im Kontext globaler Migration und Rechtextremismus. Sie leitete das Austrian Center for Fashion Research ACfFR (BMWFW | HRSM 2017-2021) und war u.a. Forscherin im DFG Netzwerk Verflochtene Geschichten von Kunst und Migration: Formen, Sichtbarkeiten, Akteure‘ (2018-2022) sowie Research Fellow am Goldsmiths College, University of London, Department for Visual Arts, UK (2004-2005). Zu ihren international bekanntesten Veröffentlichungen und (Co-)Herausgeberschaften zählen Fashion and Postcolonial Critique (2019), Fashion as Politics: Dressing Dissent (special issue Fashion Theory. Vol. 23, 2019), Aesthetic Politics in Fashion (2014), sowie Fashion Knowledge, Theories, Methods, Practices and Politics (2022). Ihre Arbeit wurde mit dem Lise Meitner-Habilitationsstipendium des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen/Deutschland (2005) und der Maria-Goeppert-Mayer Gastprofessur an der University Vechta (2004) ausgezeichnet.

    abstract: This Ph.D. proposal addresses the practice of ‘dress' among sub-cultural and counterculturalgroups and its relation to digital wearable technologies. It considers ‘dress' as an extension of thebody, medium for projecting a view or symbolizing a discourse, instead of approaching it as aform of a fashion trend. By studying performances of embodiment in the digital sphere, I willanalyze the shift from the corporeal representation of the physical world into the virtual realmand Social medias. This Ph.D. questions how the new wearable technologies - especially the useof Augmented reality - may bring back the immediacy of the body as a ‘territory' of action by‘materializing' digital realm's ‘visibility' on and around our bodies. Specifically, how the use ofwearable technology may then reflect social performing of identities and sociality in the broadersense. The proposed doctoral project evaluates some of the social and ethical consequences of theuse of Augmented reality, while it dominantly contributes to the field of studying new ways ofthe performance of the body and human embodiment within the digital materiality.Slavna Martinovic has graduated from the London College of Fashion in 1998 starting an international career as a stylist for fashion magazines, later pursuing costume and fashion design. She has lived and worked in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London and Frankfurt creating in the field of visual art, fashion, film and theatre.In 2009, she has completed MA in Multimedia Arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade and was a guest student through 2015 and 2016 at the Department of New Media at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.Her research interests are a continuation of her decades long interests in dress, fashion and subculture.Currently she divides her time between her career in costume/fashion design and writing her PhD thesis, taking part in symposiums, conferences and workshops within her field of study. The working title of her thesis is Dress and Subversion in the Digital Age: ‘Digital Skin’ -Territory of Action. She lives between Frankfurt, Vienna and Los Angeles and wherever her work may take her.

  • Öl-Mode und Modernisierung: Eine Geschichte der Mode und Kleidung im Iran, 1941-1979

    abstract: Diese Dissertation untersucht die Geschichte der iranischen Mode und Kleidung im Zusammenhang mit der Modernisierungspolitik zwischen 1941 und 1979. Ich behaupte, dass in dieser Periode, die ich die Ära der “Öl-Mode und Modernisierung” nenne, die Modernisierungsagenda, durch die Politik des iranischen Staates und durch die steigenden Öleinnahmen, die Entwicklung der Mode im Iran vorantrieb. Jedes Kapitel dieser Dissertation untersucht Aspekte dieser Entwicklungen mit einem anderen Ansatz zur Definition von Mode. Neben der Bedeutung dieser Geschichte für Modestudierende, -praktikerInnen und -forscherInnen zeigt sie, wie nicht-binäre Lesarten der vorrevolutionären Mode es transdisziplinären Studien ermöglichen, diese über den modernen Iran zu erweitern, indem sie “subalterne” Stimmen wie Jugendliche, Männer und Frauen aus der Mittelschicht sowie kulturelle und kreative Akteure berücksichtigen. Darüber hinaus zeigt dieses Projekt, dass Erzählungen über nicht-westliche Kleidung und Mode, die auf lokalen Perspektiven von Geschichte, Kultur, Identität und Entwicklung basieren, eine dekoloniale Lesart der Moden in der Region des Mittleren Ostens ermöglichen können, die sich gegen den “Orientalismus” der westlichen Mode auflehnt.Bio:Nargess Khodabakhshi wurde in Teheran geboren und ist Universitätsdozentin, Designforscherin und Dozentin für Bildende Kunst. Sie hat einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Kommunikationsdesign von der Universität Teheran und einen Master-Abschluss in Fine and Studio Arts von der Akademie der bildenden Künste, Wien. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind nicht-westliche Moden, Designtheorien und digitale Medien, wobei sie sich auf Fragen zur Geschichte und Theorie der Mode im Iran und deren Verbindungen zu postkolonialen Debatten in den Modestudien konzentriert. Seit 2016 ist sie Lehrbeauftragte für Geschichte und Theorie der Mode, Geschichte und Theorie des Designs und BA Betreuung in wissenschaftlichem Arbeiten an Hochschulen, darunter die Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, die Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, die Universität für künstlerische und industrielle Gestaltung Linz und die Universität der Künste Bremen. Neben ihrer Lehrtätigkeit hat sie auf mehreren internationalen, interdisziplinären Konferenzen Vorträge gehalten und Artikel über Mode im Mittleren Osten veröffentlicht.
