Lectures

Elke Krasny is Professor of Art and Education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Institute for Education in the Arts. She is head of the Art and Education program. As a cultural theorist and curator, Krasny researches issues of care and social reproduction, social and ecological justice, transnational feminisms, as well as memory work and the politics of history in contemporary art, architecture, curatorial practice and art education.

Her exhibition Hands-On Urbanism. The Right to Green was shown at the 2012 Biennale in Venice. Together with Angelika Fitz, she curated Critical Care. Architecture and Urbanism for a Broken Planet (2019). She curated the monographic exhibition Yasmeen Lari. Architecture for the Future (2023) together with Angelika Fitz and Marvi Mazhar. Edited volumes include: Curating with Care, with Lara Perry (Routledge 2023); Curating as Feminist Organizing, with Lara Perry (Routledge, 2022); Radicalizing Care. Feminist and Queer Activism in Curating, with Sophie Lingg, Lena Fritsch, Birgit Bosold and Vera Hofmann (Sternberg Press 2021), Critical Care. Architecture and Urbanism for a Broken Planet, with Angelika Fitz (MIT Press, 2019), In Reserve! The Household with Regina Bittner (Spector Books, 2016), Frauen:Museum. Politiken des Kuratorischen in Feminismus, Bildung, Geschichte und Kunst / Women’s Museum. Curatorial Politics in Feminism Education, History, and Art (Löcker Verlag, 2013). Her book Living with an Infected Planet, Covid-19, Feminism, and the Global Frontline of Care will be published with transcript in 2023.

Elke Krasny supervises dissertations on feminist and emancipatory dimensions of contemporary curatorial and artistic practice, didactics and education of the arts as well as memory work, spatial practices, architecture, and urbanism.

    abstract: In 2003 Sociópolis was presented at the second edition of the Valencian Art Biennial. Shortly after, it went from being "a maquette and slide-show extravaganza" to becoming a master plan for a large urban development project backed politically by the regional government and funded by state owned banks. The plan envisaged the construction of 2500 housing units in the Southern suburbs of Valencia, Spain. 13 international architecture offices published their concepts for social housing schemes. In 2017 the projects, it seems, will never be finished. In the meantime, most of the actors involved in Sociópolis have been erased by the effects of the economic crisis and the conditions of the construction industry have dramatically changed.The story of Sociópolis raises critical issues relevant to our understanding of the urban spaces’ production processes and shows how those are intertwined with complex economic systems, modes of political governance, citizen's wishes and desires, and the arts. Its -at least partial- failure prompts a reflection on the gap among model, project and reality.By reconstructing the sequence of events surrounding Sociopolis, as a case-study of failed large urban developments, through archival and field research bringing methods from architecture - mappings and spatial diagrams - and from social sciences - qualitative interviews - into an architecture history and urban geography research, I intend to gain an understanding of the actors at play in urban processes and their, sometimes, controversial narratives, thus developping a history of Sociópolis as it is, as it was and as it would - might- be. The multiperspective storytelling of Sociopolis will reveal insights on the underresearched relationship between architecture and real estate.
