Publication Series
The volumes in the series comprise collected contributions on subjects that are the focus of discourse in terms of art theory, cultural studies, art history, and research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and form the quintessence of international study and discussion taking place in the respective fields. Each volume is published in the form of an anthology edited by staff members of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Authors of high international repute are invited to write contributions dealing with the respective areas of emphasis. Research activities such as international conferences, lecture series, institute-specific research focuses, or research projects serve as the points of departure for the individual volumes.
Starting with volume 20, the academy implemented a peer-review process that follows international standards and guarantees a maximum level of quality. As a result of the anonymous reviews, editors and authors receive an intersubjective view of their texts and proposals for revision. Each volume is freely accessible in the repository of the
Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (“Open Access”).
The publication series is edited by the Rectorate of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Radicalizing Care: Feminist and Queer Activism in Curating
Elke Krasny, Sophie Lingg, Lena Fritsch, Birgit Bosold, and Vera Hofmann (Eds.)
Berlin, Sternberg Press, 2022

What happens when feminist and queer care ethics are put into curating practice? What happens when the notion of care based on the politics of relatedness, interdependence, reciprocity, and response-ability informs the practices of curating? Delivered through critical theoretical essays, practice-informed case studies, and manifestos, the essays in this book offer insights from diverse contexts and geographies.

INTRA! INTRA! Towards an INTRA SPACE
Christina Jauernik, Wolfgang Tschapeller (Eds.)
Publication date: November 2021

INTRA! INTRA! calls a variety of thinkers to revisit INTRA SPACE, an artistic research project that experiments with the substances, constructions, and manifestations of our bodies in unchartered architectural waters of the near future. INTRA SPACE is a spatial, biological, technical and conceptual infrastructure for shared encounters with Carla, Dame (maybe Vivienne), Bob, Old Man and friends.
INTRA SPACE is an experimental zone, set up to explore diaphanous relations between engineered virtual figures, humans, technical equipment and machines. Lingering between cameras, eyes, screens, mirrors and images of selves, this book is full of movement and flicker, of decreation, of dwelling at the periphery of someone else’s vision, of resolutions beyond the eye/I. Strange encounters as springboards to unforeseen turns and perspectives. INTRA SPACE is the subject of this book, opening an arena for the companions and guests who walked in and out of this space in conversation with us.

Dizziness—A Resource
Ruth Anderwald, Karoline Feyertag, Leonhard Grond (Eds.)
Publication date: November 2019
Buying source

Dizziness—A Resource is a multidisciplinary reader collecting findings of the eponymous long-term artistic research project initiated by artists Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond and co-edited with their collaborator, philosopher Karoline Feyertag. Indeed, dizziness is more than feeling dizzy. Contributions by artists, researchers from experimental sciences as well as cultural studies, and philosophers trace dizziness not only as a phenomenon of sensory input impacting our vestibular system, but also as a twofold phenomenon of ‘sense’, creating meaning, and of ‘sense’, triggering emotions, highlighting the transversal nature of the phenomenon. The interdependence of sense and sensing, of cultural constructs and sensuality, of somatic and cognitive knowledge can only be conceived as being a complex relation of formation and dissolution, of habituations and transformations, pertaining to our shared reality and our individual experiences This is further reflected in the programmatic claim, that states of dizziness can be seen as a resource.

Stop and Go | Nodes of Transformation and Transition
Michael Hieslmair, Michael Zinganel (Eds.)
Berlin, Sternberg Press, 2019
Buying source

Stop and Go was a research project by architect and artist Michael Hieslmair and cultural historian Michael Zinganel from Vienna in collaboration with geographer Tarmo Pikner from Tallinn and historian and anthropologist Emiliya Karaboeva from Sofia. The project focuses on the transformation of hubs and terminals as well as formal and informal nodes along the network of pan-European road transport corridors connecting the former East and West of Europe.
The book presents several trans-disciplinary case studies in the geographical triangle between Vienna, Tallinn and Helsinki and the Bulgarian-Turkish border. Each text investigates how differently the networks and temporary habitats of highly mobile actors along these road corridors – both in the post-urban intermediate zones and in the city centers – have undergone and continue to undergo significant changes before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the enlargement of the EU, and the re-expansion of transport infrastructure.

Fashion and postcolonial critque
Elke Gaugele, Monica Titton (Eds.)
Berlin, Sternberg Press, 2018
Buying source

Fashion and postcolonial critque outlines a critical global fashion theory from a postcolonial fashion perspective. It investigates contemporary articulations of postcolonial fashion critique, analyzes fashion as a cultural, historical, social and political phenomenon involved in and affected by histories of colonial domination, anti-colonial resistance and processes of decolonization and globalization and thereby makes a programmatic intervention into contemporary fashion research. Coming from such diverse disciplines as art history, textile studies, anthropology, history, literary studies, cultural studies, sociology and fashion theory and featuring the journalistic, photographic and artistic work of practitioners from the field of fashion media, the chapters in this book reflect the multidisciplinary and diverse scope of contemporary postcolonial fashion research.

Border Thinking: Disassembling Histories of Racialized Violence
Marina Gržinić (Ed.)
Berlin, Sternberg Press, 2018
Buying source

Border Thinking: Disassembling Histories of Racialized Violence aims to question and provide answers to current border issues in Europe. Central to this investigation is a refugee crisis that is primarily a crisis of global Western capitalism and its components: modernization, nationalism, structural racism, dispossession, and social, political, and economic violence.
In this volume, these notions and conditions are connected with the concept of borders, which seems to have disappeared as a function of the global neoliberal economy but is palpably reappearing again and again through deportations, segregations, and war. How can we think about these relations in an open way, beyond borders? Is it possible to develop border thinking for a radical transformation, as a means to revolutionize the state of things? To do this, we must reconsider what is possible for the social and the political as well as for art and culture.

Rethinking Density: Art, Culture, and Urban Practices considers new perspectives and discussions related to the feature of density which for a long time has been part of urban-planning discourses and is now regaining the attention of artists and practitioners from a number of different disciplines. In an interplay of models, coping strategies, and experimental approaches, this publication combines research from cultural studies, artistic research, sound studies as well as architectural and urban theory. The disciplines face the challenge to explore and reflect social structures, situation-specific qualities and social awareness of urban realities based on a critical attitude and social justice. In this sense, this volume provides an overview of the methodological and thematic spectrum of recent research in the field of density.

Putting Rehearsals to the Test. Practices of Rehearsal in Fine Arts, Film, Theater, Theory, and Politics
Sabeth Buchmann, Ilse Lafer, Constanze Ruhm (eds.)
Berlin, Sternberg Press, 2016
Buying source

Although the format of the rehearsal is used across a number of disciplines—in film and theater as well as fine arts—it has been scarcely considered in historical and contemporary art discourses. With this in mind, Putting Rehearsals to the Test investigates the role and function of the rehearsal as a methodology, modus operandi, medium, site of representation, and reflection on processes of artistic production. As the contributions show, practices of rehearsal put those procedures—sometimes joyful, sometimes troublesome but structurally productive—into the foreground to replace given conventions and regulations with new forms and rules. Shaping working processes (the in-the-making) and products (the making-of) without defined aims and ends, artists, activists, and theorists working with strategies of rehearsal focus on moments of contingency, interruption, recommencement, irregular repetition, uncertainty, and failure within existing systems. Practices of rehearsal, in attempting to transform asymmetric labor divisions, appear as links between aesthetic judgment and social or institutional critique. This book is a critical and timely reappraisal of the methodologies of the rehearsal, and makes a claim for the aesthetic and political potential of the unfinished project.

Spaces of Commoning: Artistic Research and the Utopia of the Everyday is the outcome of a research project by a group of artists, architects, and social theorists. In the face of an exhilarating politics of accumulation and dispossession, the group explores commoning as the subject as well as the means of their collective study. The power of the commons, this book suggests, does not reside in the promise of a coming together free of friction. As different dimensions of power organize the terrain of the social, social movements are often caught between competing agendas, and the gap between aims and everyday life. It is precisely the sites of these struggles that the book calls spaces of commoning. As such, this study is part of a much wider recognition of the necessity to rethink and undo the methodological premises of Western sciences, arts, and architecture, and to raise unsettling questions on research ethos, accountability, and the entanglement of power and knowledge.

Pink Labor on Golden Streets. Queer Art Practices is particularly concerned with combining, juxtaposing, or playing off various artistic strategies where form and politics intervene. Two artistic attitudes, often perceived as divergent, are described here: the choice of form attributed to political issues versus political stances dictating the question of form. This book sheds light on contradictory standpoints of queer art practices, conceptions of the body, and ideas of “queer abstraction,” a term coined by Judith Jack Halberstam that raises questions to do with (visual) representations in the context of gender, sexuality, and desire.
Pink Labor on Golden Streets builds on an exhibition and a conference that took place at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2012. The contributions in this book expand on these ideas and practices through interviews, essays, collages, as well as personal and academic texts.

On Productive Shame, Reconciliation, and Agency prompts a unique cross-disciplinary enquiry into the productive potentialities of the affect of shame. This book contests the ontological understanding of shame and the psychoanalytical interpretation of it based on personal traumatic experiences linked to lack, loss, memory repression, and absence. Rather, the book builds on complex issues (initially proposed by Paul Gilroy) that concern coming to terms with a grim colonial and imperial past: How can one deal with the personal and collective memories of “paralyzing guilt” after dreadful atrocities and genocides? How can such negative experiences be transformed into “productive shame” (not only for the perpetrators, but also for the victims and witnesses)?
The collection of essays, discussions, and interviews reflect on the intersection of the historicity, materiality, and structures behind culturally constructed race and racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Romaism, and queer shame across different disciplines, fields, and theories (for example, in philosophy, art and art history, visual culture, architecture, curating, postcolonial history, gender and queer studies). Various case studies and artistic projects employing collaborative and participatory research methods are analyzed practices that empower the process of turning shame into productive agency. The ensuing role of productive shame is to prevent the recurrence of the institutional structures, patterns, and events that are responsible and constructive of racism, and has been contextualized in recent debates on political responsibility and reconciliation in Europe and Africa.

Authors: Elizabeth Freeman, Renate Lorenz, Nana Adusei-Poku, Ana Hoffner, Sharon Hayes, Mara Lee Gerdén, Jamika Ajalon, Yva Jung, Suzana Milevska, Andrea Ray, Ingrid Cogne, Mathias Danbold, Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh
In her divergent and interdisciplinary book Not Now! Now! Chronopolitics, Art & Research Lorenz illuminates the topic of chronopolitics through contributions from art theorists, artists, and artistic researchers. With a foreword by Elizabeth Freeman, whose work has delved extensively on such notions as temporality and body politics, Lorenz invites the reader to explore postcolonial and queer debates through artistic practices that foreground time.In the introduction, Lorenz locates her interest in the numerous intersections between deferral, opacity, and respect talking about "chrononormativity", "respectability", "straight time", and the right not to be clearly seen/read as a defense against aggression. She analyses Kenneth Anger's film "Puce Moment", and later Oliver Husain's "Purfled Promises" in order to discuss further on É. Glissant's concept of opacity encompassing at once otherness - or a sense of a-synchronicity with the norm - in terms of race and queerness.

Aesthetic Politics in Fashion outlines critical studies in the present cross-sections of fashion, art, politics, and global capitalism. Critically examining contemporary collaborations of artists, media, and fashion labels, this groundbreaking anthology locates fashion within ecological and ethical discourses, postcolonial styles, and critical reflections on whiteness. Contributions from a distinguished group of international scholars debate fashion as a cultural phenomenon at the intersection of artistic, creative, economic, and everyday practices.
Aesthetic economies, the production of space, and alternative aesthetic politics are explored from interdisciplinary angles: art history, cultural science, sociology, design, and fashion studies. Aesthetic Politics in Fashion advances theorizing of fashion as an aesthetic metapolitics.

Performing the Sentence brings into dialogue the ways that "performative thinking" has developed in different national and institutional contexts, within different disciplines in the arts, and the conditions under which it has devel- oped in experimental art schools. The anthology collects 21 essays and conver- sations that weave in and out of the two key areas of research and teaching within performative fine art. They bring to light the conventions involved in the production, presentation, reception and historicization of performance art, as well as the specific cultural and political implications. The various contributions also show how these conventions are produced through or within each artwork, independent from their specific contexts, offering ways of thinking beyond their usual frames of reference. At the same time they recognize the substantial work carried out by artists, critics, and theorists who have built the meanings, references, and implications since the beginning of the "performative turn."

Transcultural Modernisms is based on the findings of an interdisciplinary research project with focus on modernist architectural projects realized in the era of decolonization. It maps out the network of encounters, transnational influences, and local appropriations of an architectural modernity manifested in various ways in housing projects in India, Israel, Morocco, and China that served as exemplary standard models, not only for Western societies. The emphasis in Transcultural Modernisms is on the exchanges and interrelations among international and local actors and concepts, a perspective in which "modernity" is not passively received, but is a concept in circulation, moving in several different directions at once, subject to constant renegotiation and reinterpretation. Modernism is not presented as a universalist and/or European project, but as marked by cultural transfers and their global localization and translation.

In the last two decades there has been a significant boom in the cultural sensibility towards sounds and noise - a kind of sonic boom that can, following the second meaning of this term, be seen as a breakthrough of the sonic itself. In the wake of this phenomenon, the relationship between Fine Arts and sound as a material of production on the one hand, and the field of Sound Art which emerged since the 60s on the other hand was recalibrated. Questions surrounding issues of spatiality in the Fine Arts that gained in importance with the surge of intermedia installations were increasingly posed on the basis of experimental sound. Pop music has recognised its specific relation to the materiality of sound as its primary source and positioned it at the core of self-reflective projects. Through the ubiquity of individual and ever-present sonic markers such as mobile phone jingles and sound installations in public space, everyday life has become the scene of a continuous sonic semiosis.

"New Media Objects" verschränken Analoges und Digitales.

Liquid Homelands. The sonic productions of Second Generation [South] Asian Women
Ruby Jana Sircar (author)
Vienna, Schlebrügge.Editor, 2008
Buying source

This essay is an attempt to conceive a necessary step to be made by an emacipated "second generation" diaspora on its way to independence, no longer bound to the post-colonial and therefore not locality defined. The "second generation" was able to create its own self-definition, rooted within media and independent content, and thus emancipated itself from geographical and racist or sexist definitions; it is now no longer possible to keep on relating to theoretical roots within presenting a contemorary perspective or outlook.
Post-colonialism is like a religious bind that can lo longer hold against long-needed reforms. By trying to analyse and document the phenomenon of a "second generation" that places itself and its cultural productions and language within the liquid form of media, it is possible to break this bind built on geographical heritage and ethnic parameters.

Re-Politicizing Art, Theory, Representation and New Media Technology

Vienna, Schlebrügge.Editor, 2008

While so-called new capitalist global exhibition projects that either include selected Third and Second World artists and their artworks or are organized just for them are developing, so is a subtle system of inclusion and exclusion. These projects demonstrate some important new directions that can be seen not only as conceptual shifts but also as technological ones. Key here is the technique of transfer that provides the means of reproduction. The center (the capitalist First World) establishes hegemonic interpretations of the other worlds. We can detect a dialectical process between the technology of writing and the politics of plublishing. Theory and the industry of theoretical writings are precise pyramidal constructions which are carefully safe-guarded. Who can publish where and at what time and, moreover, who is positioned to provide the first line of interpretation, are extremely important dicisions within the capitalist system. Huge symposia, seminars and panels are organized to support world exhibitions and global cultural projects, circulating the same theoretical personalities and public opinion makers who continually reproduce the capitalist system in theoretical terms. It is perfectly clear that in the field of global contemporary art and culture, we are not dealing with gestures of just exchange and production. We are instead dealing with the delineation of political lines within a certain (public) space, with a codification of this space and a naming of its political subjects. The question is whether, in addition to this process of codification, we also have spaces of resistance?

Einstein is emerging ever more clearly as one of the most representative and complex figures in the commitments of European artists and intellectuals between the First World War, revolution, avant-garde art, the Spanish Civil War and National Socialism. With his books "Negro Sculpture" (1915) and "African Sculpture" (1921) he opened up the view of the "reality" and "intensity" of this art. He co-edited various journals (incl. Die Pleite), collaborated with G. Grosz and J. Heartfield, wrote a very successful "Art of the 20th Century" and a first monograph on Georges Braque. In Paris he published, with G. Bataille, "Documents" (1929). In an intellectual biography in which an epoch is portrayed, the American philosopher David Quigley maps out the Einstein's various stages and positions in the territory of the political, philosophical and aesthetic arguments for a "new" art and a "new" society.

In reading all the theoretical contributions to this book, an essentially common idea of the social can be observed which is of fundamental importance for a new definition of artistic production: a process-related order of institutionalized actions, including the linguistic actions to which individuals are exposed. For here, in the repetition of such institutionalized acts, is where subjects first emerge at all. Objects, whether they be objects of everyday use or whole architectures, are like moulds which provide for the institutionalization of actions. The artist emerges as a social figure, as the product of a society and the agent of political interests. From this point of view, the status of objects, the status of the "work" is not the expression of a circumscribed meaning, but the instrument of forming a subject. The opposition of theory and practice becomes obsolete. Subject and object are meaning written into actions.
