Lectures

Ruth Sonderegger (1967) has been Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetic Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since 2009. 
 
She completed her PhD in Philosophy (1998) at the Free University Berlin. From 2001 to 2009 worked as Associate and Full Professor at the Philosophy Department of the University of Amsterdam. 
 
Currently, she researches the history and systematics of the concept of critique as well as (everyday) practices of critique and resistance; her second research focus is on the history of aesthetics (as a philosophical discipline) and its entanglements with racial capitalism.

    abstract: In my dissertation, I investigate different forms of representation of Nazi crimes in Austrian films and films co-produced with Austria. My selection of films focuses on the use of different forms of representation such as re-enactments, interviews and the use of archival material. The central questions of my investigation are: With which cinematic means are memories, narratives, and images represented? How do films influence the culture of memory? How can something as intangible as memory be visualized? The dissertation also investigates the question of whether the messenger report is a suitable alternative to the dominant cinematic forms of representation of Nazi crimes. Contrary to the frequently used cinematic method of staging scenes by actors as re-enactments that pretend to be authentic, the messenger in the messenger report does not claim to be a witness of what s/he reports, i.e. to have been “there”. S/He is and remains a distanced mediator and is aware of it.

    abstract: My dissertation examines notions of collectivity based on three cinematic-political practices: In 1967 filmmakers based in Paris and striking factory workers based in Besançon meet and found Les Groupes Medvedkine, the Medwedkin Groups. They collectively produce films until 1972, which address the factory workers' working and living conditions and their political and cultural claims. Between 1979 and 1983 Adriana Monti produces the film Scuola senza fine (School without end) in a collaborative process with unemployed women. The women are acquiring school-leaving qualifications through classes that were implemented by Italian unions. After graduation they do not want to leave the classes and continue with them in a self-organised way. In 2002 the feminist collective Precarias a la deriva organises weekly strolls (derivas) through the city of Madrid during which a changing group of women comes together to walk to the places that are important in their precarious working and living conditions. The experiences that are exchanged during the derivas are dealt with in a collectively produced video from 2003: A la deriva por los circuitos de la precariedad femenina (Adrift through the circuits of feminized precarious work).My research approach is based on intersectional feminist theories of collectivity and collective forms of action. I explore the conditions under which collectivity can come into being and I examine notions of collectivity and collective forms of action based on the cinematic-political practices the three collectives develop. I thereby analyse the construction principles of collectivity as well as questions of positioning, privilege, power relations and representation in collective practices.

    abstract: In meinem Dissertationsprojekt wird das Zuschauen selbst zum Ort an dem die Aufführung ihren Ort hat: Das Wie des Zuschauens und seine politische Bedeutung werden in Resonanz mit bestimmten zeitgenössischen Theaterarbeiten untersucht – u.a. mithilfe des Konzepts der Zeugenschaft (Margarita Palacios) sowie mithilfe von Theorien, die über lineare Konzeptionen von Zeit bzw. Zeitgenossenschaft hinausgehen (Elizabeth Freeman, Rebecca Schneider) und nichtlineare Formen von Zeit und Geschichte beschreiben (bspw. anhand des Nachlebens, des Trauerns oder des Unbewussten). Das Wie des Zuschauens beziehe ich hierbei auf die wechselseitige Durchdringung der jeweilig relational angelegten Sphären von Nicht-Erzählbarkeit und Nicht-Vergessen-Können, die sich im Verhältnis von Darstellungsweisen auf der Bühne und Wahrnehmungsweisen der Zuschauer herausarbeiten lassen. Sobald etwas erzählt werden könne, könne es laut Psychoanalytiker Werner Bohleber auch vergessen werden – dies gilt für die ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten von Clara Furey, Faustin Linyekula, Ellen Furey und Malid Nashad Sharpe sowie Romeo Castellucci nicht oder anders: Sie wirken nach, leben fort und ragen in meine Gegenwart hinein, kurz: Sie bleiben. Sie bleiben als affektive, imaginäre und körperliche Reste und Spuren. Was machen Spuren und Reste, die nicht gänzlich zu Geschichte zu gerinnen vermögen, mit meiner Art des Zuschauens und der ihr inhärenten Form von Relationalität? Die ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten tragen die Spuren der einschneidenden Gewaltereignisse der Geschichte und sind dementsprechend von einem Problem der Darstellung von Nicht-Darstellbarem gekennzeichnet. Das Problem der Darstellung von Nicht-Darstellbarem kann zu einer potentiellen Transformation der Beziehung zu Zeit, zu Raum, zu Geschichte, Erinnerung und Vergangenheit, und zu Anderen führen (v.a. Emmanuel Lévinas, Edouard Glissant). Meine These lautet, dass die ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten vor allem durch Einsatz einer bestimmten Form von Zeitlichkeit zu einer ästhetischen Ausnahmeerfahrung werden können, die nicht gänzlich zu Geschichte gerinnt. Die Potentialität des „Nicht-Gänzlich-Zu-Geschichte-Gerinnens“ steht mit einer besonderen Form von Zeitlichkeit in Verbindung, die sich auf räumlich und zeitlich eingrenzbare Gewaltereignisse der Geschichte bezieht, deren traumatische Spuren jedoch nicht in Raum und Zeit abgrenzbar sind. Das spezifische Wirken einer traumatischen Erinnerung entsteht mit der Nichtkommunizierbarkeit einer Verletzung. Sie bezieht sich nicht auf etwas, das in der Vergangenheit zeitlich und räumlich abgegrenzt ist, „sondern auf etwas das ist, vielleicht mehr: etwas, das nicht ist." (Martina Kopf, Trauma und Literatur). Die ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten berühren auf je unterschiedliche ästhetische Weisen, im Spannungsverhältnis von indirekten und direkten Verweisen, kollektive, traumatische Erinnerungen und Gedächtnisse – sie berühren was ist und nicht ist. Bei eingehender Betrachtung der einzelnen, ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten fällt eine Gemeinsamkeit im zeitlichen Arrangement auf: Jede der ausgewählten Theaterarbeiten vermag sich einer übergangslosen, vereinheitlichenden und vorwärts laufenden Vorstellung von Zeit zu widersetzen: Etwa durch ein Pausieren und Anhalten von Bewegung, durch den Einsatz von Tableau Vivants und lebenden Stills oder durch eine schier endlose Wiederholung von Bewegungsabläufen. Diese besondere Form von Zeitlichkeit erlaubt ein Fühlen und Denken, Leben und Zuschauen in Relation: In Relation zu Geschichte, die nicht Geschichte ist, zu Vergangenheit, die nicht vergangen ist – zu simultanen Zeiten, die multipel, heterogen und wiederkehrend sind. Das hieße: Zuschauen in Relation zu einer Zeit, die mich fortwährend angeht, ohne in einem singulären, unmittelbaren Hier und Jetzt zu verschwinden.

    abstract: Contemporary discussions of art and labor by theorists, activists, artists and research collectives are increasingly departing from perspectives that emphasize the artist’s work model, her working conditions, her exceptional position in society and economy, and her incorporation into capitalist processes of production.My attempt is to more specifically position artistic activity and the art economy in the broader economic landscape. I intend to do so through empirical fieldwork research that focuses on one particular artwork, and the economic activity surrounding it, in order to clarify the relationship between art, labor and the economy more generally.My aim is to elaborate on questions such as: 1) What characterizes the economies in which artistic activity takes place? 2) Under what circumstances can the production process of art be taken as an alternative economic activity? 3) To what extent and in what ways can artistic practices be seen as part of the capitalist production process? These questions are all framed by the larger question of 4) how artistic labor becomes a commodity and how it is appropriated by the art market.
